KS2 Music CPD Programme Continuing Professional Development for Primary Music Practitioners PDF Print E-mail
Music Services throughout the country are currently involved in rolling out whole class instrumental and vocal programmes (Wider Opportunities) which are contributing to a revolution in music education at KS2. However, in order to for this exciting opportunity to be successful, the current music workforce needs to be expanded and given the necessary musical skills, knowledge and understanding to teach music effectively at this level.

In the hope of achieving this, the DfES (now the Department for Children, Schools and Families) provided £2 million for a national professional development programme for music teachers. The Open University and Trinity Guildhall have been given the job of developing and running this training programme.

 Aims of the CPD programme

The main aim of the programme is to improve professional practice at KS2 within the context of whole class instrumental and vocal work. It enables the National Curriculum for Music and the instrumental curriculum to come together in an exciting, meaningful and effective way. The programme is underpinned by four principles:

  • access and inclusion
  • creativity
  • collaboration
  • integration

The CPD programme will support all those who are accepted to do the training to work in these ways

 Who is it for?

The programme is for everyone involved in the delivery of the Wider Opportunities projects or who expects to be during this school year. This could include instrumental tutors working for a music service, class teachers, teaching assistants and community and freelance musicians.

The CPD programme covers the following areas:

  • Learning Musically
  • Teaching Musically
  • Making Music
  • Making it happen in the classroom
  • Evaluating and Reflecting

Each of these comprises a number of modules which are delivered through online units and face-to-face workshop units.

How the programme is organised

Each region has a Regional Programme Manager (RPM) who is responsible for the mentors and practitioners in their region. All practitioners are assigned a mentor who will support them through the programme.

How to get involved in the programme

There is no charge for taking part in this training as it is fully funded by the DCFS (DfES). However, the funding does not cover costs for time away from school or expenses. Application for places on the programme is an individual process  block applications will not be accepted.

In order to find out more about this exciting opportunity or to begin your application you need to go to the following website:

www.ks2music.org.uk

If you want to begin your application straight away, follow the link on the left hand side of the home page entitled Create a new account. When you have completed this page you will be given a username and password for the website you will then be able to log on. After you have submitted your application, you will be notified as to whether or not you have been successful in gaining a place on the programme.
